Origin of the name: Derived from the Latin « malum granatum » which means « grainy apple » due to its color and from the Latin « granum » meaning « grain » due to its shape.

Group of origin: Garnet

Chemical Composition: Iron and aluminum silicate, Fe3Al2Si3O12.

Hardness: Between 6.5 and 7.5.

Crystal system: Cubic

Deposits: Austria, Afghanistan, Brazil, India, Sri Lanka, Czechoslovakia.

Color(s): Red, brown, sometimes purple.

History and Legends:

  • In the Bible it is a lantern to illuminate Noah in the middle of the darkness and the term escarbucle (as the Romans called it) is used in the evocation of the fourth heaven of the Koran.

  • Garnet was used to engrave other materials in Rome, Greece and Ancient Egypt.

  • The garnet stone was used by barbarians during the emergence of its use in the 5th century AD

  • The Vikings used the garnet stone in ceremonies, giving garnet the virtue of being able to guide the dead to Valhalla, paradise.

  • The 18th century also saw the use of garnet in Europe, in ornaments thanks to the Bohemian garnet.

  • In the 19th century, Asia in particular, saw this stone used by the warriors of Honza, in northern Pakistan. Due to his blood color, the latter gave him a more powerful killing power and therefore he fired garnet bullets at his British opponents instead of lead bullets."
